LAMP
A PLAY OF MOVEMENT, CONTRAST, AND LIGHT.
PROBLEM
Design and build a lamp that captures the elements of contrast, balance, scale, movement, harmony, and focus.
PROCESS
Starting with many concept sketches, I moved to playing around with various materials, and then to building out small scale models of different concepts (see scale model below). Flat 2D paper shapes transformed into dynamic 3D forms.
construction
Once I landed on a design that captured the essence of contrast, movement, and balance, I started to convert it to scale. In scaling up the lamp, the paper behaved differently, and I realized in order for the black paper to hold it's form I would need to embed a wire between two sheets to create structure. Finally, it was about balancing each element and the draping of the translucent vellum, such that from every angle there was a complete juxtaposition of unity and contrast. The final detail was dropping pennies in a small paper pocket on the inside until the lamp hung just right.
